Chapter Six
Will
The morning after arriving in Belle Holly, I woke up later than usual. I'd gotten used to waking up in the early morning hours to get a head start on work, but apparently, that habit hadn't followed me home. The rest of the house still seemed quiet, so I relaxed and took my time starting the day. I meandered around my boyhood bedroom, reminiscing over middle school math trophies and high school photos with friends.
I'd been home since leaving for college, but never for long enough to redecorate. My mom had allowed my room to stay as it was, a shrine to who I'd once been—before I'd somehow forgotten the magic of my hometown.
Shaking off my nostalgia, I opened my suitcase and examined the selection of clothes I'd packed. Slacks somehow didn't feel right, and I found myself turning to the shiny black dresser in the corner, instead. Sure enough, in the bottom drawer, I managed to find a pair of jeans my mom had insisted on buying me years ago when I'd been home on a rare visit.
Checking the size, I was pleased to see they would still fit. I couldn't wait to see how surprised everyone would be when they saw me wearing the casual pants instead of my usual, dressier attire.
I paired them with a navy blue sweater of my own that I'd brought, and stepped out into the hallway.
The whole upstairs was still dark, despite the late morning hour. Kyle's old bedroom, where Jenna was staying, was the next door over. I paused outside of it, listening for any sign that she might be awake. After a full minute passed in silence, I resigned myself to trekking downstairs alone.
As soon as I reached midway down the stairs, I found all of the downstairs lights were on. "Good morning," I called out, but no one answered. I quickly realized that despite the lights being on, there was no sign of anyone. I made two passes through the main floor before I was ready to call it quits. Someone had left fresh coffee in the pot, so I helped myself to it.
I nearly dropped my mug a few seconds later when I heard a loud thud at the back door. Hot coffee still in hand, I went to investigate.
Imagine my surprise when I looked out the french glass doors just in time for a ball of snow to smack square into it, making the same loud thud I'd heard a moment ago. I could see figures outside, so I opened the door and started to step out...
Just in time to take a snowball to the face.
A shriek of laughter greeted me as I used my sleeve to wipe my face. I looked over to see what Mel was cackling about, only to find Jenna taking a dramatic bow. She stood up quickly and struck a sickly sweet pose with hands clasped together once she realized I'd noticed her.
"Morning," she chirped as if she hadn't just assaulted me with a frigid snowball right to the face.
